今日は、各国のパスポートが選ばれるまでのプロセス
The process for selecting colours
を紹介します。
There are “many possible scenarios” as to why countries opt for a particular colour, according to Boghossian.
“Members of the European Union use burgundy, while Caricom states use blue passports,” he said. Caricom, or the Caribbean Community and Common Market, includes 15 Caribbean countries and dependencies.
There may be geographical and political motives for using certain colours. “Some could argue that the burgundy red is due to a past communist history,” Boghossian said. He added that blue passports were generally symbolic of the “new world” — North America, South America, Oceania, etc.

dependency : 依存、属領(名詞)
カンマ(,)で囲まれている
or the Caribbean Community and Common Market
は、直前のCaricomを説明している文章なので、読解の際は省略可能です。
また、
A, while B
という風に、,(カンマ) while となっている場合は、この’while’は「～の間」という意味ではなく、
Aである一方で、B
という風に訳します。
ちなみに、Caricomのメンバーの’dependency’は、イギリス領の「モンセラット」というところです。

geographical : 地理学的、地域に関する(形容詞)
political : 政治上の(形容詞)
motive : 動機(名詞)
certain : (特定できるが名前が分からない)ある～(形容詞)

argue : ～を主張する(動詞)
due to : ～が原因で、～するはずである
※電車の遅延の原因とかで、’due to…’という表現がよく使われます
past : 過去の(形容詞)
communist : 共産主義者(共産主義者)
ここの’could’は、「～できた」ではなく、「～し得る、され得る」という使い方になります。日常会話でもよく使います。

generally : 一般に(副詞)
symbolic : 象徴的な(形容詞)
全体を通して訳すと、

確かに、オーストラリアやカナダはパスポートの色は青だし、カリブと言えば青い海がイメージできますが、その海のイメージに沿ったパスポートの色になっているんでしょうかね。
EU諸国の色であるワインレッドは、品があっていいですよね。
